Maybe everybody knows the problem,...
You have some USB HD with thousands of MP3s or other Data, the problem is to know where is what. Or bigger if the harddisk crashes, it's not the losing, but what I have had, it'a all recoverable, but when don't know what,...
I usally make it with "C:\ DIR /b/n/s/o > Filelist.txt" that's enough for USB HD, but too uncomfortable for my needs now.

I want to make this in WINDOWS, in an exe.programm, DOS is cool but there must be a better way
I need that for work to make drawing und documentation Listing,
not so good to cart around in DOS with very long network-names,
was it CD or RD 
I found some programms, but they are all overdesigned or too primitiv (KO)

Also, wenn ich Dich richtig verstanden habe, möchtest Du eine Software, die Dir die Struktur Deiner USB-Platte anzeigt. Das mit dem DOS-Befehl ist schon nicht mal so verkehrt, zumal der Befehl unter Windows XP keine Dateinnamen mehr nach 8.3 Norm abschneidet. Das hört sich jetzt vielleicht blöd an, aber (so gehe ich vor), strukturiere die Platte immer nach Dateiarten, quasi:

u.s.w. Das bringt schon einmal eine gewisse Grundstruktur auf den Speicher. Damit würde ich erstmal anfangen. TreeSize nutze ich sehr häufig, um Speicherfresser aufzuspüren, daher kann ich die Software nur empfehlen.
Aber evtl. habe ich jetzt Deinen Post falsch gedeutet, schreib ma zurück.

It's for the office secretariat, they need a list of outgoing files, since today they copy the name of each file manually into a word document  Mainfolders (electrical, civil, mechanical), Subfolder (docu, draw, calc,...), etc
With "TreeSize" there is an Excel-list of Folders/Subfolders/Files, and than just to insert Headlines and such Details (maybe I write a Macro to make that finish also automatical, clear filestructur). Path (A) and Filename.*. (B) separate, to find what is where (A) and copy the list at once (B). Good enough 
PRIVATE
But there is a problem with higher Data-volume, like if you want to make this on a full HD. My DOS DIR Filelist.TXT has 10 MB !!
I have not tried it at home, but it take a lot of time because such programms are checking a lot a lot of unnecessary informations (for only List), that costs CPU and than in the export to Excel *phu*. I just need a smaller Programm to make the DIR Export. But I guess, I will use DOS, it's fast and stable  
Edit: For pivate use a FREE programm, don't want to pay 50 Euro to get a feature which I have free since DOS 1.0
The file-struktur is not the problem, either in office or private, find everything without searching.
And 5+3 for Filenames is enuogh, who need 255 ???
